April Meeting Recap

We met on Saturday April 15th.

Quilt Events

A reminder of some upcoming quilting events:

  • A Mountain Quiltfest : Pigeon Forge, June 5 - 8
  • Smokey Mountain Quilters Quilt Show : Knoxville Expo Center, June 23 - 24, entries due April 22


  • Charity Quilts

    We will be sending one of last year's charity quilts to Poland for Ukrainian refugees as part of the Wrap Ukraine with Quilts project (see https://hellocottons.com/)

    Another of last year's quilts was bound by Christy

    Polka dot star blocks were collected in for the first of this year's charity quilts.  Watch this space for how those look when assembled into a quilt.

    We saw a great variety of quilts in our Show&Tell - variety in styles and construction methods.

    April 2022 Meeting Recap

    The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild gathered for our monthly meeting on Saturday, April 23.

    Upcoming Quilting Events

    • Quilt Alliance Textile Talk: Experimental Quilting with Alex Hernandez: Wednesday, April 27, 2pm EST (Presented by: San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, New Museum of Los Gatos (NUMU), and Palo Alto Art Center). Register online at https://quiltalliance.org/events/textile-talks/
    • A Mountain Quiltfest 2022: June 6-9 (M-Th) at Leconte Center in Pigeon Forge: Quilt entries must be postmarked by May 4, 2022. No fee to enter! Further info can be found on the website: www.mypigeonforge.com/event/quiltfest
    • 2022 MQG Make-A-Difference Challenge: Design and sew any size quilt embracing the theme of OCEANS that uses all Moda Bella Solids. Entries will be submitted online via photo submission, limit of one entry per MQG Member. Each entry fee of $12 will be donated in its entirety to Oceana, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and restoring the world's oceans on a global scale. Submissions will open for entries on July 11 and close on August 8. MQG members will have the ability to vote for the winners from August 10-16.     • Smoky Mountain Quilters 2022 Quilt Show: August 5-6 at the Knoxville Expo Center. Quilt entrees due by June 7. Entry fee is $15 per quilt. Further info can be found on the website: https://www.smokymtnquilters.com/quilt-show.html#/


    MQG Webinar Spotlight

    Awaken Your Inner Color Genius with Carrie Bloomston: Join artist, writer, textile, and sewing pattern designer, Carrie Bloomston of SUCH Designs, as she helps you tap into your own innate sense of color. She'll discuss basic color theory and help you find your own resonant palette. Color is highly personal, and there are a few tricks that can make it really fun and easy even for a beginning quilter or sewist.

    Looking Ahead

    The next KMQG Quilt Show will take place March 3-31, 2023, at the Emporium in downtown Knoxville. Members are encouraged begin thinking about what modern quilts they would like to submit for consideration. All sizes of quilts are welcome.

    Next meeting: May 21 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Knoxville. Social start at 10:15 am

    April/May 2021 Meeting Recap


     The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild met via Zoom Saturday, April 17th at 10:30am.

    Our Featured Freebie was presented by Misty Benson. She shared a tutorial for individual quilt block design boards from Snowy Days which can be found here.
     
    The April Member Spotlight was Charla Brown, She has a new online fabric shop, Tree House Quilting Co. Check out the details here on the blog post or on the KMQG Instagram account.
     
    We are seeking volunteers for Featured Freebies and Member Spotlights. If you have a favorite free tutorial or pattern that you use in your quilting life, please share it with us! Contact modknox@gmail.com to work out which month your Featured Freebie will be highlighted. Also, we'd love to learn more about our members. Reach out to modknox@gmail.com to schedule a month to be in the Member Spotlight.
     
    The guild was able to meet live and in-person Saturday, May 15th. We had in actual in-person show and tell! 
     
    First off, we were able to see the Restoration House Charity Bee groups quilts or quilt tops. We are very excited to be able to contribute these beautiful quilts.

    We launched our Elements of Modern Quilting Series. The first element addressed was Alternate Gridwork. Sarah Elliott demonstrated different aspects of alternate gridwork offering a basic definition and sharing online examples in addition to some of her own quilts. The goal of this series is to provide clarity on each of the elements in the MQG's definition of Modern Quilting and help our members build confidence in using them in their own quilting.

    The Smoky Mountain Quilters 40th Anniversary Ruby Jubilee Quilt Show is July 30-31, 2021 at the Knoxville Expo Center. The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild is sponsoring the Modern category.
     
    QuiltCon 2022:The MQG sent an email regarding QuiltCon. Here are the pertinent details:
    • Dates: Feb. 16-20, 2022 in Phoenix, AZ

    • Hotel Reservations: Open June 7, 2021 (Discounted rooms sold out).

    • QuiltCon Catalogue of Events Release: June 24, 2021

    • Registration for Members: August 4, 2021

    • Submissions: September 1-October 31, 2021

    • Community Outreach Challenge Theme: Angles

    We will not have a meeting in June. Those who signed up will be participating in an online Zoom workshop with Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill.
     
    Our next meeting is July 17th at Westminster Presbyterian Church outdoor pavilion.
