Charity Quilts

Our first charity quilt of 2022 has been put together and quilted and now just needs to be bound.

The Coming Together blocks were collected in for our second charity quilt of 2022 and Jane has taken them to assemble the quilt top.

Details of the block pattern and color palette of our next charity quilt will be announced at our next meeting.

April/May 2021 Meeting Recap

 The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild met via Zoom Saturday, April 17th at 10:30am.

Our Featured Freebie was presented by Misty Benson. She shared a tutorial for individual quilt block design boards from Snowy Days which can be found here.

 

The April Member Spotlight was Charla Brown, She has a new online fabric shop, Tree House Quilting Co. Check out the details here on the blog post or on the KMQG Instagram account.

 

We are seeking volunteers for Featured Freebies and Member Spotlights. If you have a favorite free tutorial or pattern that you use in your quilting life, please share it with us! Contact modknox@gmail.com to work out which month your Featured Freebie will be highlighted. Also, we'd love to learn more about our members. The guild was able to meet live and in-person Saturday, May 15th. We had in actual in-person show and tell! 

 

First off, we were able to see the Restoration House Charity Bee groups quilts or quilt tops. We are very excited to be able to contribute these beautiful quilts.

We launched our Elements of Modern Quilting Series. The first element addressed was Alternate Gridwork. Sarah Elliott demonstrated different aspects of alternate gridwork offering a basic definition and sharing online examples in addition to some of her own quilts. The goal of this series is to provide clarity on each of the elements in the MQG's definition of Modern Quilting and help our members build confidence in using them in their own quilting.

The Smoky Mountain Quilters 40th Anniversary Ruby Jubilee Quilt Show is July 30-31, 2021 at the Knoxville Expo Center. The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild is sponsoring the Modern category.

 

QuiltCon 2022:The MQG sent an email regarding QuiltCon. Here are the pertinent details:

• Dates: Feb. 16-20, 2022 in Phoenix, AZ

• Hotel Reservations: Open June 7, 2021 (Discounted rooms sold out).

• QuiltCon Catalogue of Events Release: June 24, 2021

• Registration for Members: August 4, 2021

• Submissions: September 1-October 31, 2021

• Community Outreach Challenge Theme: Angles

We will not have a meeting in June. Those who signed up will be participating in an online Zoom workshop with Sheri Cifaldi-Morrill.

 

Our next meeting is July 17th at Westminster Presbyterian Church outdoor pavilion.

Member Spotlight: Misty Benson

How long have you been quilting?

Since 2009


Who or what inspired you to start quilting?

I started quilting with my grandmother who had Alzheimer's. It started as a way to keep her hands busy so she could be calmer.

Tell us about the first quilt you ever made.

My first quilt was a Yellow Brick Road. I had only done garment sewing before so I prewashed all the fat quarters. It was a mess.


What is your favorite quilt you’ve ever made?

The pattern is a 4-Patch Posie and I made it with Alexander Henry dragon fabric with a 24" repeat. That quilt makes me very happy.


What kind of sewing machine(s) do you have?

My main machine is a Pfaff Performance 5.0 but I'm in love with vintage Viking Husqvarnas from the 70's. I have a 6430, a 6440, and a 6460.



What is your favorite sewing tool or notion?

That's a toss up between my hand turned seam ripper handle or my mini tart pan wrist pin cushion.


What are your favorite colors to use in quilts?

Blue, green, and purple.

Describe your quilting style in one word.

Unfinished


What other hobbies do you have?

Knitting, garment sewing (not alterations!) and embroidery. I've also dabbled in blacksmithing and Bladesports competitions.

Do you collect anything? (Other than quilting fabric, of course!) If so, what?

Neither, I'm a recovering Diet Mountain Dew addict.

What is your dream job?

If I could fiigure that out I might be doing it!

Winter

If you won millions in the lottery and had to selfishly spend it on yourself, what would you treat yourself to?

After I built the addition for a new, larger sewing studio and fully stocked it, I would move on to a fancy sports car.


Do you prefer the beach or the mountains?

Mountains


When was the last time you did something for the first time?

I mounted a piece of quilted artwork on canvas.

Would you rather be able to run at 100 miles per hour or fly at 10 miles per hour and why?

Fly, because everything is closer "as the crow flies".
