August 2024

Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild met on Saturday August 17.

Our latest guild quilt for The Restoration House project is quilted and just waiting to be bound.  Members worked on individual blocks that were assembled to make this lovely quilt.

After the meeting, some members gathered for a sew-in to work together on a quilt for the Outreach Challenge for QuiltCon 2025.  We had members sewing, cutting, pressing ...  Watch this space for pictures of the finished quilt soon.

But before the sew-in we had our usual show & tell.

September 2021 Meeting Recap

A sew day in September! The KMQG had a sew day to assemble our Improv Triangles quilt top. Several of our members brought machines and spent the afternoon creating improv blocks. With the blocks that other members had previously completed, we made enough blocks to complete the top. The completed quilt will be submitted to to QuiltCon 2022 as part of the Community Outreach challenge.

Our Member Spotlight in September was Sherry Kasper. The Member Spotlight is a great way for us to get to know our fellow guild members. We get a little insight into who they are and see a bit of their quilting style. If any of our other members would be interested in participating, please send an email to modknoxville@gmail.com.

Our 2021 Modern Mini Quilt Challenge continues. The theme is Architecture and the minis are due at the October meeting. We look forward to seeing the minis and their inspiration photographs.

September 2017 Meeting Recap

We had an enjoyable September meeting, with a good balance of business and sewing for our latest charity quilt project. First, the business.

Retreat
The KMQG Fall Retreat will be held at The Lodge at Douglas Lake in Sevierville from November 9-12, 2017. Our retreats are always a lot of fun, and members are looking forward to a few days of distraction-less sewing and creating. Would you like to join us? Good news! We've opened the retreat up to nonmembers, so reserve your spot today! You can stay 1, 2, or 3 nights at a cost of $50 per night. (The price may change slightly if the group size is less than 12.) If you're interested, sign up using this form. A 50% deposit is requested at time of reservation, with the balance due by October 21.

Holiday Swap
We've decided to organize a little swap between members, with gifts to be exchanged at our holiday party on December 16. Watch your email for more information and email modknoxville@gmail.com if you have any questions.

Donation
The KMQG will make a monetary donation to Westminster Presbyterian Church in appreciation for the use of their meeting space at no charge. The church is raising funds to build a pavilion on the property.

Officer Nominations for 2018
Nominations are open for KMQG officer positions for the 2018 calendar year. Elections will be held at the December 16 meeting, with roles and responsibilities transitioning in January. If you're interested in holding an office or have questions about any of the positions, please email modknoxville@gmail.com. Offices are: Community Chair, Special Events Coordinator, Education Coordinator, Secretary, and Treasurer.

Next Meeting: October 21, 2017 from 10:15-12:00 at Westminster Presbyterian Church

And if you've read through all of that and lasted this long, it's time for show and tell!

And that's not all! The meeting wrapped up with a sew-in to finish assembling our next charity quilt for The Restoration House of East Tennessee. We used Angela Pingel's Cracker Scraps tutorial for these blocks.

August Meeting Recap

Thanks to everyone who joined us for our August meeting and sew-in. In addition to an inspiring round of show and tell, we covered a lot of business and looked ahead to our activities through the end of the year. Here's the rundown:
  • Quilts for Pulse: It looks like the KMQG will have 4 finished quilts to send to the Orlando guild for distribution (that's a finished quilt top pictured above). A few of our members took the quilts in progress to work on -- if that's you, please email modknoxville@gmail.com to arrange hand-off to Melissa so that she can ship the finished quilts by Sept 10. If you're quilting but not binding, be sure to allow us time to get the binding completed.
  • Next quilt for The Restoration House: It's time to work on blocks for our next donation quilt to The Restoration House. Instructions and a link to a tutorial are located here. Blocks will be due at our November meeting.
  • Gracie's Gifts: We welcomed Cynthia Barreira, founder of Gracie's Gifts, a nonprofit that provides smocks and swaddling blankets to the NICU at East Tennessee Children's Hospital. Cynthia told us all about Gracie's Gifts, and we're excited to support her efforts. We're working out a plan for the best way for our members to contribute our talents and resources. We'll have more information on this soon.
  • September meeting 9/17: This will be another sew-in meeting, and we hope to get a start on our project for the QuiltCon 2017 charity quilt. We'll also play Left-Right-Center, so bring 3 fat quarters in solid colors if you want to play along and maybe boost your stash of solids.
  • October: No meeting as we will have our annual retreat.
  • November meeting 11/19: This will be a sew-in meeting, and blocks for Restoration House will be due.
  • December Holiday Party 12/17: Don't miss out on the food, fun, and games! More info to come...

March Meeting Recap

Melissa's medallion quilt

We had a lovely meeting in March with a good size crowd sticking around afterward for the sew-in, during which Taylor assembled our 24" blocks for our long overdue Quilt of Valor.

The Smoky Mountain Quilters of Tennessee Quilt Show is coming up soon -- June 17 and 18. The deadline for entries is May 3; here's the form and more information. Unfortunately, there will not be a Modern category this year, but we will continue to show support by sponsoring one ribbon.

We've booked Shannon Brinkley for the Knoxville Skyline: Scrappy Applique Workshop on July 16 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. Spots are still available and open to all interested parties. Please use the form here.

NEXT MEETING: Our next meeting will not be at the usual day and location but rather will be on Saturday, April 9 at Striped Light in North Knoxville. We'll work on a project for our upcoming Quilt Show. Please arrive no later than 10:30 and plan on staying for 3 hours. Bring water and snacks (if you think you'll get hungry) and a jacket if it's supposed to be cold. This will be a free, creative class for KMQG members that we hope everyone will take advantage of.
