Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild met on Saturday August 17.

Our latest guild quilt for The Restoration House project is quilted and just waiting to be bound. Members worked on individual blocks that were assembled to make this lovely quilt.

After the meeting, some members gathered for a sew-in to work together on a quilt for the Outreach Challenge for QuiltCon 2025. We had members sewing, cutting, pressing ... Watch this space for pictures of the finished quilt soon.

But before the sew-in we had our usual show & tell.

March 2024

KMQG met on Saturday March 16.

We have two completed quilts for The Restoration House with blocks pieced by various members. Quilts assembled, quilted and bound by members.

We had been given a heads up to have a spring cleaning de-stash and bring our unwanted fabric and supplies along to the meeting. At the end of the meeting everything went into a big swap and members were able to take some new finds home with them. Unclaimed supplies will be donated where they can be put to good use.

Note: our April 2024 meeting will be a week earlier than usual: Saturday April 13th.

KMQG Block of the Month 2022: Block 6, Sawtooth Star

It's time for Block 6 in our Block of the Month Quilt-Along! We found this one posted by the Boulder Modern Quilt Guild as part of their 2018 Block of the Month series, and we love that it's so graphic and a perfect example of the "modern traditional" characteristic of modern quilting.

According to the Boulder MQG, the Sawtooth Star has been around since the late 1800s and is a very iconic, classic quilt block. The block uses squares, rectangles, single flying geese (FG) and half-square triangle (HST) units. This version uses two colors to create a simple divided variation.

The tutorial includes links for additional instructions on creating the HSTs and flying geese. You can also access a cheatsheet here.

TIPS!

It's super easy to make 3 blocks this time -- just multiply all the cutting instructions by 3! Make 3 identical blocks, and when they're finished, you can flip one or two of them around for the effect of opposite color placement without doing any extra work.
The HSTs need to be trimmed down to 3.5-inch squares before you assemble the block. If you have any HST units left from your April Mod Square block, you can use them for this block.
When sewing flying geese, it helps to sew just alongside the marked line (toward the corner you will cut off). That gives you a scant 1/4" seam allowance and helps ensure your geese aren't too small.
The Add-a-Quarter ruler is helpful when trimming flying geese.

November Meeting Recap

Our November meeting was a lot of fun!

We wrapped up the Finish It! Challenge and awarded prizes. Participating members received one entry for each item they were able to check off their list. Congratulations to our winners!

September Meeting Recap

Hello! The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild's monthly meeting in September 2019 was incredibly well-attended! In addition to a wonderful showing from our members, we welcomed some visitors and even picked up one new member. Our guild has grown quite a bit in the last few years, and we're all so happy to share our love of modern quilting with other quilters and crafters in the area.

A quick recap of what happened this month and what's coming up ...

We exchanged brown bags of fabric for our secret holiday gift swap. Members will make a gift for the person whose bag they picked, and gifts will be exchanged at our holiday party on December 14.

Our annual fall retreat at Whistlestop Quilt Retreat in Sweetwater, TN, is planned for October 24-27. Members can sign up using the form emailed to them. Contact modknoxville@gmail.com for more information.

The next Sit and Stitch social event will be Friday, October 18 at Panera (Cedar Bluff) at 6:30 p.m. Bring handwork or design work, grab a drink or bite to eat, and enjoy the company.

One of our members, Cathy, is teaching a class in October at Stitches N Stuff Fabric Shoppe in Powell. You can find information on it here. The two-day class uses the Creative Grids new Oval Ruler.

We recently delivered another quilt to The Restoration House for a graduating family. We were told that the mom's favorite color is purple, so we used a purple print backing to customize it for her. Thanks to all the members who created blocks, Sarah for assembling the top, and Jennifer for longarm quilting. (The block is from the Sugarplum Table Runner Quilt Along by Faith Jones of Fresh Lemons Quilts.)

We also have donated our 2018 QuiltCon charity quilt to the local American Cancer Society group to include in their silent auction fundraiser at the Hope Gala in November. We hope it raises a significant amount of money for them, and we look forward to hearing the results.
