January 2021 Meeting Recap

The Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild met via Zoom January 16th. We had 21 members in attendance.

Our first task was voting to alter our by-laws to accommodate the number of board members for our organization. Jennifer Grace moved to accept the proposed change and the motion was seconded. Next, our membership was reminded that dues for 2021 are payable until February 28th. $45 can be paid via PayPal (friends and family option only) or a check can be sent to Christy Cooper.  If you have any questions, please send an email to modknox@gmail.com.

With business out of the way we were able to turn to more quilt oriented topics. We're asking for pictures of completed Chromatic Quilts from our 2020 Quilt Along. We'd like to have those by the end of February.

There are a couple of KMQG Zoom Sit N Stitch sessions coming up. The next is on February 12th from 7-9pm and another on Thursday March 25th, also from 7-9pm. Check your email for more details about these events or reach out if you need more information.

We're looking for volunteers for our Featured Freebie and new Member Spotlight features. If you've found a free project or tutorial that you'd like to share with the group we'd love for you to present it during an upcoming meeting. Reach out to modknox@gmail.com to sign up for an upcoming month. Also, send us an email if you're interested in doing a Member Spotlight. This is a great way for us to get to know each other especially since we don't have the benefit of regular in-person meetings.

Our charity quilt project for the Restoration House of East Tennessee is going to be subdivided into smaller groups. Those signed up for the small group charity project should get their group assignments by January 31st.

QuiltCon Together is February 18th-22nd. Several of our members are taking classes and we hope that every one gets an opportunity to view the quilt show. We're moving our next meeting date to February 27th when we'll discuss our experiences with virtual QuiltCon. We hope to see you there!

Member Spotlight: Emily Doane

Welcome to a new feature on the KMQG website, our monthly Member Spotlight! We're kicking things off with one of our guild's founders, Emily Doane.

KMQG: How long have you been quilting?

Emily: Since 2009 (12 years?!)

Who or what inspired you to start quilting?

My mom, Pat.

Tell us about the first quilt you ever made.

Well, the first quilt I ever made was in high school. My mom was making an Irish chain quilt and I thought it would be fun to make one too. So I made a blue/orange Irish chain quilt out of Wal-Mart fabric, then tied it to quilt it together. I gave it to my then-boyfriend. And then took it back when he broke up with me! That was in 2001. But I didn't make a quilt again until 2009 when my mom invited me to a Dresden plate quilt class. I walking into my very first quilt shop - less interested in quilting and more interested in just spending some time with my mom. This is what I consider my "first" quilt I guess. It was a Dresden plate quilt I made with 1930's reproduction fabrics. It still brings me joy.

What is your favorite quilt you’ve ever made?

"Made in GDR 26" is definitely my favorite quilt. It was inspired by a vintage teacup design and I absolutely love the shapes and the colors. I happened upon the teacup motif when my friend Melissa text me and said "This looks like you! You should totally make a quilt out of it!". I can't say enough how wonderful it is to have friends that love quilting and encourage you in your creativity!

What kind of sewing machine(s) do you have?

I have a used Janome 6500. It really needs a tune-up. Where's your favorite spot to get Janomes tuned up?

What is your favorite sewing tool or notion?

Clover wonder clips!

Anthony Bourdain - He knew how to eat, had beautiful stories, insight, and compassion for humanity.

What is your favorite food?

Cheese!!!

Coffee or tea?

Tea

Sweet or savory?

Savory

If you were a dessert, what would you be and why?

Panna Cotta - a little sweet - and versatile!

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what five things would you want to have with you (not things you need to survive, but things you would want to have)?

a puppy, needles, thread, an iron skillet, a sheep

What is your dream job?

If you won millions in the lottery and had to selfishly spend it on yourself, what would you treat yourself to?

Beach!

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Well, I'm always working on a new recipe or craft - but I guess, on a larger scale, I kayaked down some rapids in the summer. I don't think I'll do that again.

Would you rather be able to run at 100 miles per hour or fly at 10 miles per hour and why?

Run at 100 mph - I could see more places!

December 2020 Meeting Recap

December Meeting Recap

The KMQG December meeting was held the 12th. We discussed new resources available on the MQG website and upcoming online events.

Our 2019 QuiltCon charity quilt, Friendship Bound, was donated to the American Cancer Society for their annual fundraising auction. We were very pleased that it raised $575.

In 2021 we'd like to continue the Featured Freebie portion of our meetings and add more member spotlights. For Featured Freebies we are asking our members to share favorite free projects or techniques that they've come across. More details about Member Spotlights coming soon!

We're looking for pictures from the Chromatic Quilt Along in 2020. A few of the quilts are complete, several are paused in the quilting stage. We'd love to have pictures of the completed projects and we're shooting for February!

It's membership renewal time! $45 via PayPal (friends and family option please) or send a check to Christy Cooper (address in email).

Elections were held, no one was contested. Our Chairperson is Elizabeth Rea. The Secretary position is split between Sarah Elliott and Misty Benson. Sherry Kasper is Education Coordinator. The Programming and Special Events Coordinator is Aimee Davis. And Christy Cooper is Treasurer.

Our show and tell time also contained our holiday gift swap, it's always such fun to see what our members have made for each other!

Our next meeting is January 16th via Zoom. Log in at 10:15, social time until 10:30.
