Member Spotlight: Aimee Davis

It's time for the June Member Spotlight! This month we're focused on KMQG Special Events Coordinator, Aimee Davis.

How long have you been quilting?

I made my first quilt in 2009 and never quilted again. I decided I'd wait until my kids were out of the house.

Who or what inspired you to start quilting?

Quilts are really a part of my family heritage and I've long been fascinated by the mounds of family quilts I've had access to. I'm a fiber/sewing addict and I knew that one day I'd have to carry on the tradition of quilting.

Tell us about the first quilt you ever made.

In 2009 my daughter needed bedding for her 1st "big girl bed" and I'd seen a quilt pattern for birds that I was obsessed with. A friend bought me the pattern as a birthday gift so I had no reason not to make it. I stalked this line of Heather Bailey fabric that had just come out, finally broke down and bought it and got started. I had a lot of fun making it and she still has it on her bed :)

What is your favorite quilt you’ve ever made?

My uber large Fancy Forest quilt. I worked on it over the course of almost 2 years and right before we moved and I lost my super large sewing space I finished it. It's filled with fabrics that I made garments for my daughter when she was small, garments for myself and other projects and I love looking at it and remembering all the different projects.

What kind of sewing machine(s) do you have?

Juki

What is your favorite sewing tool or notion?

Needle and thread. I started out as a hand embroidery artist, so any time I can sit and do any kind of hand sewing it calms me like nothing else.

Who is your favorite fabric designer?

Heather Ross, Denyse Schmidt

What are your favorite colors to use in quilts?

Jewel toned generally. I'm not much of a super bright colors girl. I kind of prefer more muted tones - but I'm really getting into low volume fabrics.

Describe your quilting style in one word.

Predictable.

What other hobbies do you have?

I love to read. I'm an aspiring writer and I love designing patterns. I used to do hand embroidery, but after 8+ years of almost full time work my hands and eyes have given out and I hung up my custom embroidery work.

Do you collect anything? (Other than quilting fabric, of course!) If so, what?

Books - slowing work on curating a home library

What is your favorite movie?

When Harry Met Sally

What is your favorite book?

Emma by Jane Austen

Who is your favorite author?

tie between Madeleine L'Engle's non-fiction stuff & Anthony Doerr

Do you have a celebrity crush and who is it?

Jude Law

If you could have dinner with one legendary person, living or dead, who would you choose and why?

Madeleine L'Engle. I absolutely love the way she interacted with her world and her writing. I long to be someone who is as observant and reflective. Her journals reflect such a calm spirit even in the midst of hardship, rejection, loss and joy.

What is your favorite food?

chips and salsa or soft pretzel

Coffee or tea?

coffee in the morning & tea in the afternoon

Sweet or savory?

sweet - but not too sweet

What is your dream job?

writer

Where is your dream vacation destination?

England & Scotland

If you won millions in the lottery and had to selfishly spend it on yourself, what would you treat yourself to?

A custom built house on acreage (for the sheep I'd raise) in a mountain "holler" next to a river

Do you prefer the beach or the mountains?

mountains

When was the last time you did something for the first time?

Last summer I finally broke down and bought a rigid heddle loom that I'd been dreaming about for years and started learning how to weave.
